The three field groups that require the dMAT
During the introductory phase, the dMAT is mandated for Master's applicants whose undergraduate degree falls in one of these groups.
⚙️ Engineering
B.E., B.Tech or equivalent degrees where the official branch is an Engineering field.
💰 Commerce, Finance & Economics
Degrees focused on financial markets, auditing, banking, taxation and economic sciences.
📈 Business & Management
Degrees focused on enterprise management, administration, logistics and marketing.
Borderline & interdisciplinary degrees

Disciplines that are exempt right now
Degrees entirely outside the Engineering, Commerce and Business groups are exempt during this introductory phase.
Note: this is the introductory-phase scope. Germany may expand the dMAT to more disciplines in future cycles — we'll keep you informed.
Four routes to an exemption
Degree level
Only Master's applicants take the dMAT. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are exempt. Bachelor's students with fewer than 5 semesters (3-year) or 7 semesters (4-year) completed are also outside scope.
Your intake
The requirement applies from Summer Semester 2027 onward. Applicants for Winter Semester 2026/27 or earlier are entirely exempt.
The 29 June 2026 cut-off
If you completed online APS registration — or shipped your complete hardcopy APS package — before 29 June 2026, you're exempt for that APS procedure.
Exchange & partnerships
Students in officially confirmed exchange programmes, double-degree initiatives or university partnerships are exempt with confirmation from their institution.
